Gardening in March: Nature awakens

March marks the beginning of the most vibrant season for our garden. Nature awakens, plants gradually enter a growth phase and the first blooms make their appearance, filling the space with colors and aromas. It is the ideal period to properly care for our trees, shrubs and flowering plants, laying the foundation for a healthy and lush growth in the coming months.

With the appropriate cultivation work, such as pruning, transplanting and proper fertilization, we can enhance the vitality of plants and prevent potential problems. At the same time, it is the right time to plan new plantings and renew our garden, creating a beautiful and balanced space that we will enjoy throughout the spring and summer.

In the guide that follows, you will find useful tips and practical instructions for the basic tasks of March, so that your garden remains healthy, well-maintained and full of life.

Garden plants

Trees

  • Pruning and thinning of branches are carried out to give the plants the desired crown shape and to promote the growth of new shoots.
  • This period is suitable for transplanting new plants in gardens, taking care to create good drainage in the pit to avoid water stagnation and the subsequent weakening of the tree. To avoid “transplant shock”, it is important to place 1 ROOT POWER tablet in the soil in the pit before placing our plant. In case the soil is dry, it is advisable to water the plant immediately after planting.
  • In plants that show yellowing of the leaves, such as magnolia, root applications with IRON CHELATE are recommended to prevent iron chlorosis.
  • In case of late frosts, use SINERGON PLUS for a quick recovery.

Hedges (shrubs)

  • Transplants are made to replace weakened plants in the existing fence or to create new fences. Use ROOT POWER when transplanting.
  • Very important for success is the creation of rich and loose soil from a mixture of soil, peat and fertilizer rich in NITROGEN.
  • The top shoots of climbing plants (ivy, wisteria) that grow near houses are pruned, in order to avoid the penetration of branches into cracks, tiles and gutters causing damage.
  • NITROGEN-RICH FERTILIZER is added to develop new shoots and IRON CHELIC to prevent yellowing of the leaves.

Roses and Flowering Shrubs (Azalea, Hydrangea, etc.)

  • Pruning work is completed before vegetation begins, removing and burning the cut branches and leaves to prevent the spread of diseases (coccidiosis, fungi, etc.).
  • Prune the roses, leaving 3 buds on each branch.
  • Prune the hydrangeas, reducing the number of branches.
  • To enhance the development of new shoots, fertilization is carried out with special GRANULAR FERTILIZERS

Bulbous plants

  • Summer-flowering species, e.g. gladioli, are planted by alternating bulbs of different colors for a more pleasing aesthetic result.

Vegetable garden plants

Vegetables in a greenhouse

  • Temperatures are rising, so better ventilation is necessary by creating openings in the nylon cover.
  • Solanaceous plants (tomato, pepper, chili pepper), basil, watermelon, melon, cucumber, early beans, zucchini and pumpkins are being transplanted.
  • Radish, rocket and lettuce are ready for harvest.
  • As the crops are in growth, regular fertilization with GRANULATED FERTILIZER is being carried out.

Vegetables in an open field

  • Soil preparation and improvement work continues for onions, Swiss chard, cabbage, sprouted potatoes, parsley, celery and aromatic herbs.
  • Fertilize strawberries and carrots with GUM FERTILIZER.
  • To protect and strengthen plant defenses, apply BIFENCE NETTLE periodicall

Fruit plants

  • Work is being carried out to form new fruits: grafting and shaping/production pruning.
  • The pruning shears are disinfected and MARBEL healing paste is applied to the cuts.
  • There is still time for transplants with a “soil ball”.
  • Root applications with IRON CHELIC are recommended to prevent iron chlorosis.

Indoor and balcony plants

Indoor plants

  • Green and flowering plants (Ficus, Pothos, Tronceto, Orchids, etc.) begin to renew their foliage.
  • For the development of new buds and prolongation of orchid flowering: LIQUID FERTILIZER FOR ORCHIDS.
  • For lush new shoots: LIQUID FERTILIZER FOR GREEN PLANTS + PLANTONIC (amino acids/vitamins).
  • Increase watering and spraying to maintain humidity.
  • Periodic cleaning of leaves with polishes to remove dust and improve aesthetics.
  • Insecticidal applications for aphids and coccoids.
  • Replanting in a larger pot where necessary.

On terraces and balconies

  • Geraniums: transfer from greenhouses/attics/basements to balconies.
  • Root cleaning, removal of damaged branches, replanting with suitable soil.
  • Violets are blooming, sowing of annual and perennial flowering plants.
  • Fertilization with LIQUID FERTILIZER FOR FLOWERING PLANTS.

Succulents

Lawns

Existing lawns

  • With mild temperatures, lawns start to grow again.
  • Re-mowing: removing the tips to develop new shoots and removing yellowed parts.
  • Aerating the soil.
  • Re-seeding damaged or sparse areas with high-viability seeds.
  • Using TOP N FERTILIZER GRANULATED for new shoot growth.

New lawns

  • Complete soil preparation and sowing with appropriate mixtures for use (sports, shade, sun).
  • Fertilize with TOP N before sowing, boost initial growth with MACYS.
  • First mowing when the grass reaches ~10 cm.

By dedicating time to the basic tasks of the season, we are not just taking care of our plants, but we are investing in a garden or balcony that will give us moments of relaxation and beauty every day. With a little consistency and care, the results will soon reward us. After all, gardening is not only about care — it is also about enjoyment.
